Founded in 1989 by Charly and Jacqui Biess, Charly's is the polka-dot-painted District Six landmark behind the 'Mucking Afazing' custom celebration cakes and rainbow cupcakes that have gone out to everyone from Desmond Tutu to Oprah. The all-female family team starred in the reality series Charly's Cake Angels.

Jacqui and her daughters have run the bakery since Charly's death in 2012, and when the 2020 lockdown nearly closed the doors for good, Cape Town crowdfunded to keep them open — a measure of what this building means to the city.
